Rio de Janeiro:

Goias hired coach Antonio Lopes on Friday, a day after losing Geninho to national champion Corinthians. Lopes, who coached Vasco da Gama to the 1998 Copa Libertadores championship, managed Corinthians to its fourth national title last year. He left the club in March. Goias had its best showing ever in the national championship last year, finishing third and qualifying Copa Libertadores for the first time. The club reached the second round of the Libertadores but was eliminated last week by Argentina's Estudiantes. Goias has won only one of its first four matches in the national championship and is in 11th place in Brazil's 20-team first division. Geninho will make his final appearance as Goias' coach against Vasco da Gama on Sunday and then move to Corinthians, which is in 17th place. (AP)
