Goa confirms quarterfinal berth

Goa beat Chandigarh 1-0 to ensure a quarter-final berth in the National Junior Football Championship.

Propelled by a Irinio Fernandes goal in the seventh minute, Goa beat Chandigarh 1-0 to ensure a quarter-final berth in the National Junior Football Championship here today. In another match in Cluster IV, Delhi trounced Pondicherry 4-0 and in Cluster I, Meghalaya trounced Haryana 3-0 and Nagaland got a walkover from Mizoram. Goa now leads Cluster IV with nine points from three wins with one match remaining against lowly Pondicherry. Karnataka is second with six points from three matches. Goa attacked right from the beginning and its forward line comprising Fernandes, Bernardo Pires and Joe Rodrigues threatened the rival goal. The all-important goal was scored when striker Fernandes made full use of a pass from Joe Rodrigues. Chandigarh then tightened its defence and Goalkeeper Rajkumar also excelled under the bar effecting a number of saves. In the second half he denied Goa at least twice. Chandigarh tried to come back with some good moves but failed to score the equaliser. They forced two corner kicks and a free kick from just outside the box but all were wasted. (PTI)
