1999 Champions Girondins Bordeaux defeated Sochaux 2-0 in the French First division (Ligue-1) at the Chaban-Delmas Stadium on Saturday. With the victory, Bordeaux moved to seven points from four matches and now lie seventh place in the 20-team competition, up from 11th. Neither team was able to wrestle any real advantage on possession in the opening half an hour and goal attempts were scarce. Bordeaux's Cyril Rool broke the deadlock seven minutes from half-time when he sneaked onto the end of a fine cross by Camel Meriem and volleyed it into the back of the net. Thereafter, the closest Sochaux would come to an equaliser was in the 54th minute when Santos ran onto a through ball by Mickael Isabey - but the Tunisian international scooped his close-range opportunity over the head of goalkeeper Ulrich Rame. Bordeaux controversially secured all three points just minutes from time. A questionable ruling by the match referee occurred when defender Souleymane Diawara was adjudged to have fouled Bordeaux's Moroccoan striker Marouane Chamakh. TV replays suggested that Diawara won the ball - and was also outside the penalty area when he executed the tackle. Sochaux manager Pierre Wantiez was outraged by the decision and left the dugout for several minutes. Lilian Laslandes calmly slotted the resulting penalty kick past ex-Bordeaux goalkeeper Teddy Richert down the middle to complete the 2-0 result. (AP)
