Germany thrash Malta 7-0

Germany tuned up for Euro 2004 by cruising to a 7-0 victory over soccer minnows Malta on Thursday, with midfield star Michael Ballack scoring four goals. The World Cup runner up was coming off a stunning 5-1 defeat at non-qualifier Romania last month, but the Malta part-timers, who were down to 10 men in the last 12 minutes, were no match for Rudi Voller's men. Germany were without central defender Christian Woerns, who is having hip problems, and No. 1 goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, who was rested. Striker Thomas Brdaric, a surprise addition to the roster, sat out the match with a thigh muscle strain. Two Werder Bremen players, Fabian Ernst and Frank Baumann, missed the match because their club is in the German Cup final Saturday. (AP)
