Germany beats Paraguay 1-0 on Neuville's goal

Segwipo, South Korea:

Germany advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals after Oliver Neuville scored an 88th minute goal to hand the three-time world champions a 1-0 win over Paraguay on Saturday. Neuville swept in a half-volley from six meters yards) after Bernd Schnieder broke down the right flank and sent in a perfect cross. Germany now faces Mexico or the United States in the quarterfinals on Friday in Ulsan, South Korea. Paraguay ended the game with 10 men after Roberto Acuna was sent off in the 90th minute. It is the second straight World Cup in which Paraguay was knocked out on a late goal in the opening game of the second round. Paraguay lost to eventual world champion France in 1998 on a golden goal in its round of 16 match. Germany has now reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup in all but one of the last 13 tournaments. In a listless first half that saw Paraguay's star striker Roque Santa Cruz limp off in the 30th minute, Germany had much of the possession but neither side could scratch out many clear chances. Michael Ballack and Marco Bode slashed shots over the bar early in the match for the Germans, who were playing without the suspended Christian Ziege, Carsten Ramelow, Dietmar Hamann. Yet it was the Paraguayans who came closest in the first half. In the 35th minute, Jose Cardozo took possession on the right side of the area, chipped the ball into the center where Celso Ayala could only send his shot into the keeper's arms from 10 yards. Moments later, Kahn leaped high to tip Jorge Campos' swinging shot from 25-yards over the bar. The game picked up in the second half. Germany came close in the 47th when Oliver Neuville broke down the right side of the area, cut the ball back to Bernd Schneider, who, with plenty of space, rifled his shot straight at Jose Luis Chilavert from eight meters out. Moments later, Paraguay broke out of defense, the ball was passed forward to Campos, who outran his marker and lashed a fierce left-footed drive that forced a diving save from Kahn. Schneider's 52nd minute free-kick crashed into the side-netting and Torsten Frings clipped a shot over bar. In the 75th minute, the Paraguay 'keeper took a free kick but shot it over the bar as he sought to become the first goalie to score a World Cup final goal.
