Dortmund:

Germany beat Scotland 2-1 win in their Euro 2004 Group Five qualifying game in Dortmund on Wednesday Goals from Fredi Bobic and Michael Ballack propelled the Germans back to top spot in the group, two points clear of Iceland. Neil McCann's 66th minute strike turned out to be nothing more than a consolation for the Scots, who now have to beat Lithuania and hope Germany beat Iceland to stand any chance of qualifying for the competition. It was a tale of two German managers at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund. Rudi Voeller guiding the home side against Scotland's former German boss Berti Vogts. Voeller's charges wasted little time in gaining control - Bernd Schneider's eighth minute corner kick was only half-cleared by the Scotland defence, but Bayern Munich midfielder Michael Ballack spurned his chance. Germany eventually broke the deadlock. Frank Baumann's shot was palmed away by Robert Douglas, only for Kevin Kuranyi to set up Fredi Bobic. One-nil to the home side, 25 minutes played. The Hertha Berlin striker then helped Germany extend their lead five minutes after the break. Steven Pressley was adjudged to have impeded Bobic in the Scotland penalty area, and the impressive Ballack stepped up to double Germany's advantage. Scotland were brave, however, and when Neil McCann volleyed home emphatically from Steven Thompson's centre, it was game on. 2-1, and half an hour to play. But the comeback was not to be - helped by Maurice Ross's sending off for a clumsy challenge on Tobias Rau, the Germans held firm to regain the lead at the top of group five. (AP)
