New York:

European champion Germany finished the first round of the Women's World Cup with a perfect record after crushing winless Argentina 6-1 in Group C. Brazil nearly did the same in Group B, but an injury-time equaliser from France star Marinette Pichon set the final score at 1-1. Both teams won their groups on Saturday and advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals. "It was our goal to win our group, but we didn't think it would be so easy," said Birgit Prinz, who scored her fourth goal of the tournament. "We were very good. We had a good three games. I think we have a serious chance to win this World Cup." Germany will face the second-place team in Group D on Thursday in Portland, Oregon, while Brazil takes on the second place team from Group A on Wednesday in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Also on Saturday, former champion Norway routed South Korea 7-1 to clinch the second spot from Group B and Canada topped Japan 3-1 to advance from Group C. They will play the other two group winners, which could be defending champion United States from Group A and 1999 runner-up China from Group D. "We've beaten the US before and it's possible to do it again," said Norway captain Dagny Mellgren, who scored two goals yesterday. (AP)
