Oporto:

The disappointed French team returned to Paris after becoming the latest victims of what's turned out to be the 'tournament of shocks and surprises'. Dumped out by Greece in Friday's Euro 2004 quarter-final in Lisbon, the defending champions and favourites for 2004 never really sparkled in any of their games. Some members of the French media had questioned both the tactics and selection policy of coach Jacques Santini. They, and even some of the players, admitted they were fortunate to have garnered four points from their first two matches. A last-gasp win against England and a draw with Croatia could have ended up in two defeats instead quite easily. Still, a 3-1 win over Switzerland in their last group game meant they topped Group B, and avoided hosts Portugal in the quarter-finals. Instead, they faced Greece and must have fancied their chances of making it through to the semi-finals. But Angelos Charisteas' 65th minute goal was enough to end those dreams. (AP)
