Paris:

Most French soccer fans believe coach Raymond Domenech should take the credit for France's good form. Domenech, derided before the World Cup and mocked for his astrological beliefs, was jeered by fans at Stade de France during a friendly against Mexico in May. But in a survey published Thursday by sports daily L'Equipe, 85 percent of fans interviewed supported the coach. Domenech's insistence that France would reach the World Cup final in Germany was thought to be wild talk, and many of his choices - such as overlooking Johan Micoud, Ludovic Giuly and Nicolas Anelka - were questioned. However, after a difficult start, Les Bleus reached the final and lost to Italy in a penalty shootout. Of the 1,002 people interviewed by market research company CSA, 79 percent felt Domenech was right to force Claude Makelele to continue playing for France despite saying he wanted to retire from the national team. Domenech took over from Jacques Santini in July 2004, and his contract was recently extended until 2010 by the French soccer federation. (AP)
