London:

Starting from June 13, Jacques Santini will try to guide Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires toward another European Championship title with France. After the July 4 final, he will be trying to stop them winning another Premier League title with Arsenal. No longer wanted by his country, France's national coach has decided to join Tottenham -- Arsenal's north London neighbour - as soon as Euro 2004 finishes. "The circumstances did not permit it," he said in reference to the French Football Federation's decision not to extend his contract. "And I don't feel any useless regrets or bitterness toward whoever it may be." Now the former Lyon coach is taking on the might of the Premier League. "I am delighted to get the opportunity to join Tottenham Hotspur," Santini said in a statement released by Tottenham yesterday. "I am an ambitious man and it has always been a dream of mine to coach a big English club in the most exciting league in the world." The possibility that he could be living next door to Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger makes it an even more interesting move. While Aime Jacquet, Roger Lemerre and Santini have been in charge of a French national team that won the 1998 World Cup followed by Euro 2000, Wenger has honed the skills of Henry, Vieira, Pires and Sylvain Wiltord into helping him win three Premier League titles and three FA Cups.
