Kolkata:

The AIFF has organised a special fitness camp in Kolkata in an effort to improve India's FIFA ranking. The man in-charge is Dr Vece Paes -- a former Olympian, a doctor and Leander Paes' dad. A select group of national footballers are being taught how to keep themselves fit through the year. Such camps can go a long way in helping improve the performance of Indian footballers. Apart from teaching new forms of exercises, the camp is also being used to prepare a medical database for the participating footballers. The players have benefitted enormously from this camp and there are plans to set up similar camps in other parts of the country over the next few months. "It was good to know that one should not take injuries lightly. I learnt how to keep fitness levels up, which exercises to do and which ones to avoid. I learnt a lot," said Abhishek Yadav, Footballer. Most of the players feel that camps like this one should have started a long time ago. The team's performance over the next year will tell whether the initiative was better late than never.
