Defenders Rio Ferdinand and Michael Dawson will miss England's crucial European Championship qualifier against Estonia because of groin injuries.

London:

Defenders Rio Ferdinand and Michael Dawson will miss England's friendly against Brazil and a crucial European Championship qualifier against Estonia because of groin injuries.

Ferdinand and Dawson both withdrew from England's squad on Tuesday, the Football Association said.

Tottenham's Dawson hurt his groin playing with England's "B" side in a 3-1 win against Albania on Friday, while Ferdinand picked up his injury in Manchester United's FA Cup semifinal win over Watford last month.

The injuries leave coach Steve McClaren without several of his top defenders, as Gary Neville, Ashley Cole and Jonathan Woodgate are also missing.

England plays Brazil at Wembley on Friday before traveling to Estonia on June 6. England is fourth in Group E with six rounds to go. The top two teams qualify for the finals automatically.

Ferdinand would have been a likely starter in both games, with Dawson contending for a spot on the substitutes' bench.
