Sao Paulo, Brazil:

Eight fans were killed at a Brazilian third-division match on Sunday when a concrete section of the stands collapsed and sent the spectators tumbling several stories.

At least nine people fell through the hole at Fonte Nova stadium in the coastal city of Salvador, police said.

It was not immediately known what caused the collapse, which occurred as the game concluded and fans of Bahia celebrated a 0-0 draw with Vila Nova to earn it promotion to the second division.

Police did not give figures on injuries, but Globo TV reported dozens were hurt.

A crowd of more than 60,000 filled the stadium, which was built in the 1950s.

In the first division, Santos assured itself of a berth in next year's Copa Libertadores while Juventude made sure of its demotion.

Santos' 3-2 victory at Parana kept it in second place with one round remaining, four points ahead of fourth place, the last spot guaranteed a place in next year's South American club championship.

The loss all but doomed Parana, which remained on 41 points two behind Corinthians in 16th place, the last safe spot. Additionally, Parana has played one more game than Corinthians.

Flamengo defeated Atletico Paranaense 2-0 to remain in third and all but assure itself of a Libertadores berth while a 2-1 loss by Palmeiras at Internacional dropped it into a tie for fourth with Fluminense, which beat Juventude 3-2 on Saturday.

In other games Sunday, already crowned champion Sao Paulo rallied to draw 2-2 with Botafogo.

Midfielder Lucio Flavio scored in the 10th minute and defender Juninho added a free kick eight minutes later to put Botafogo ahead 2-0.

Sao Paulo rallied on Aloisio's tally in the 55th minute and Richarlyson equalized in the 84th minute.

Fernandao scored in the 40th and 80th minutes to lead Internacional over Palmeiras.

Rodrigao scored in the 92nd minute for Palmeiras.

Elsewhere Sunday, Sport downed Cruzeiro 1-0. On Saturday, Gremio easily downed America 3-0 with goals by William Magrao, Marcel and Diego Souza.
