Rome:

Thousands of Italian fans took to the streets of Rome to celebrate their team's 3-0 quarterfinal win over Ukraine in Hamburg. Striker Luca Toni scored two goals for the Azzurri while defender Gianluca Zambrotta added the other. Italian supporters gathered around television screens across the country to watch their team play Ukraine in the World Cup quarterfinals. Although Italy reached the final eight after a less than impressive 1-0 win over Australia, they were clear favourites against Ukraine, who were playing their first World Cup. Italian celebrations started just six minutes into the match after defender Gianluca Zambrotta found the back of the net. "It was a great game, 3-0. Italy played really well," said a fan. In the second half striker Luca Toni added two more goals to help the Azzurri to a comfortable 3-0 win. The result prompted mass celebrations on the streets of Rome. Ecstatic fans waving Italian flags filled the famed Piazza Venezia. Italy now face World Cup hosts Germany, who defeated Argentina on penalties, in the semi-finals in Dortmund on Tuesday. (AP)
