Karnataka, Services notch easy wins in the inaugural league matches of the 57th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy in Mumbai.

Fancied teams off to good start in Santosh Trophy

Fancied Karnataka and Services got off to a good start notching easy wins over their respective rivals in the inaugural league matches of the 57th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy here today. In a cluster-6 match, Karnataka drubbed Jammu and Kashmir 7-1 after leading 5-0 at half-time. In another one-sided match Services crushed Rajasthan 11-1 in Cluster-1 after leading 7-0 at the interval.In a cluster-4 match, Madhya Pradesh defeated Pondicherry 4-1 after leading by a solitary goal at lemon break. Karnataka, who seemed too good for J and K, opened the account when mid-fielder Xavier Vijay Kumar shot home in the 6th minute following a lost pass from the left flank. Winger Sheikh Sanjeeb made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute when he smartly booted home a beautiful pass from right-winger Dayanand.Dayanand again got the third goal four minutes later following a free kick while, Vijay Kumar scored his second goal in the 43rd minute off mid-fielder Rajendra Prasad's pass.A minute before the half time, Rajendra Prasad scored converting a neat back pass from winger S Sunil who did the spadework outsmarting a host of J and K defenders. Soon after the interval J and K was awarded a penalty after their winger Rasheed Sofi was brought down by Karnataka defender Dhanesh.Striker Deepak Sagral, who took the spot kick, made no mistake. Karnataka substitute Gopi and S Sunil scored the 6th and 7th goals for their team in the 80th and 85th minutes respectively. (PTI)
