England tie Sweden at Old Trafford

Sweden failed to ruin fellow countryman Sven Goran Eriksson's World Cup party but the England manager had to be content with a 1-1 draw in the friendly at Old Trafford. England created the better early openings against hosts Sweden. David Beckham with a chance to score off a free kick in the 19th minute, but the Swedish keeper pulled off a brilliant one-handed save. In the 28th minute, England got a controversial penalty after Trevor Sinclair fell in the area after a slight contact with defender Christoffer Andersson. Beckham made no mistake from the spot, smashing the ball past the Swedish keeper. But just a minute from half-time Sweden levelled the match as Hakan Mild put the ball into the roof of the net. England had several chances in the second half, but failed to convert any of them as the match ended in a 1-1 draw. England now havena€™t been beaten by Sweden since 1968. South Koreans take on Croatia In under a year, the 2002 World Cup finals will begin at South Korea's new Seoul World Cup Stadium. And the co-hosts opened their brand new showcase stadium with a friendly against an under strength Croatia. The South Koreans played aggressively from the start, with some early chances, but failed to convert any of them. However, in the 63rd minute, persistence finally paid off for South Korea, as they opened the scoring with a nicely struck shot from just outside the penalty area by Choi Tai-uk, as the crowd of 65,000-plus supporters erupted. Three minutes later, victory was sealed when substitute Lee Chun-soo's corner kick was headed towards the goal by Kim Nam-il.
