Madrid:
Deportivo de La Coruna defender Lionel Scaloni and substitute Alberto Luque netted late goals yesterday as Deportivo de La Coruna overcame FC Barcelona 2-0 in the Spanish league. Scaloni celebrated his first call-up for Argentina's friendly in Japan next Wednesday by firing the first goal in the 82nd minute. Spanish international striker Luque struck three minutes later to kill off Barcelona's hopes. The Catalan's defeat extends its dismal record in La Coruna, where it has lost on its last six league visits. They have now won just two out of their last seven league matches. Louis van Gaal's team drops to seventh place with 15 points after 10 rounds while Deportivo move up to fifth with 17. Real Sociedad is the leader with 21 points. No. 2 Valencia and No. 3 Mallorca each have 18 while Celta de Vigo has 17 and Real Madrid is sixth with 16. Later today, Madrid hosts unbeaten Sociedad in the weekend's standout encounter, while Valencia visits Osasuna. In another encounter yesterday, a goal by Brazilian international Juliano Belletti earned Villarreal a 1-0 win over Sevilla. Deportivo's late flurry came after the teams, which had gained Champions League victories Wednesday, had served up a tedious encounter which was short on goal chances. The home side, which clinched a place in the second phase with a 2-1 win at AC Milan, began brightly, with Dutch striker Roy Makaay aiming three shots on goal in the first four minutes.
