Washington:

The deal involving the sale of DC United's operating rights for a major league soccer-record price of more than $25 million has collapsed. "There's been a decision that was reached mutually to terminate the sale," team president Kevin Payne said in a telephone interview on Tuesday night. "There was a conclusion reached on both parties' parts that it probably was not in their best interests to go forward, that it was not the right kind of marriage," he added. The collapse of the deal was first reported by The Washington Post on its web site on Tuesday. Anschutz Entertainment Group, which has operated United since 2001, will run the club until a new buyer is found, the paper reported. The sale to a local group, Global Development Partners, was announced in July. "There were aspects of owning a professional sports team that were different from what Global thought,'' Payne said.
