Goias played host to champions Corinthians in a Brazilian championship match on Sunday. The home side started the match in 11th place in the standings but with seven games unbeaten, whilst Corinthians were languishing near the bottom of the table. The match started tightly, but then Goias got the breakthrough in the 19th minute. Awarded penalty They were awarded a penalty after top scorer Rodrigo Souza was brought down by Corinthians goalkeeper Marcelo Grohe, who was also awarded a yellow card. Here in the 22nd minute he was unlucky to be denied by Marcelo who pulled off a brilliant save to deny Souza his second goal of the game. Corinthians were pressing forward as well however and in the 28th minute they finally got the equaliser. Marcio Amoroso got his head on the ball and fired it into the back of the net. Goias tried to make the most of their one-man advantage and they finally took the lead again in the 76th minute. Welliton produced a left footed strike from the edge of the area that penetrated the Corinthians defence and rolled past Marcelo in goal. Twelve minutes later Goias sealed their win thanks to a goal from Nonato. The result means Goias move up to eighth place in the standings with 39 points, 17 behind leaders Sao Paulo.
