Sao Paolo:

A 70th minute goal by Gil gave Corinthians a 1-0 win over Cruzeiro in the Brazilian Championship. The Paecembu stadium in Sao Paolo, home of Corinthians welcomed Cruzeiro from Belo Horizonte for round nineteen of the Brazilian Championship. Corinthians, 17th in the league before the start of play needed the three points to stay clear of the relegation zone. A win for Cruzeiro would keep them in the hunt for a top three finish. They were just five points adrift of leaders Santos. It took the best part of 30 minutes for this match to gain any sort of momentum. Up until then, chances were few and far between. Then in the space of five minutes, Corinthians had two opportunities to open the scoring. An incisive move down the left fell to Fabinho but Cruzeiro goalkeeper Arturo got down quickly to make the save. Cruzeiro attackMoments later Gil was put clean through on goal but he curled his effort just wide of the post. The reply suggests a Cruzeiro defender might just have got the faintest of deflections to send it wide. Cruzeiro showed more willingness to attack in the second half. Leandro's pass met the oncoming Tapa but his shot was cleared by Betao. The only goal of the match came in the 70th minute. Substitute Vinicius worked himself some space for the shot - Arturo parried but only into the path of Gil who steadied himself before shooting. Cruzeiro should have equalised almost immediately but Tapa could not apply the finish after a fine move. He directed his header into the grateful arms of Corinthians goalkeeper. Victory for Corinthians and a memorable night for Gil whose reputation as one Brazil's brightest talents continues to shine.(AP)
