The result left Toluca and Cienciano atop the group with nine points each with the Peruvian club ahead on goal difference. Argentina's Boca Junior has seven points and Bolivar has been eliminated with four points.

Two teams from each of the eight first-round groups advance to the second round. Group 7 will be decided on April 26 when Toluca plays Cienciano and Boca Junior meets Bolivar.

The Mexicans opened the scoring Thursday in La Paz, Bolivia at the 14th minute when Sergio Ponce settled a long ball before finishing. Vicente Sanchez added the second with a powerful blast in the 88th.
