Colombia reaches Copa quarters

Lima:

Defending champion Colombia beat Bolivia 1-0 and became the first team to reach the Copa America quarterfinals, while Peru trounced Venezuela 3-1 to keep its playoff bid alive. Colombia reserve forward Edixon Perea scored in the 89th minute on a looping header which sneaked over the outstretched arm of Bolivia goalkeeper Leonardo Fernandez at Nacional Stadium yesterday. "We were lucky we took advantage of an opportunity," said Colombia coach Reinaldo Rueda. In the late match, Nolberto Solano scored a goal and set up another for Peru to defeat a 10-man Venezuela, which was knocked out of the quarterfinal hunt for a 13th straight Copa since 1967. Colombia heads Group A with six points after two games, followed by Peru with four, Bolivia one, and Venezuela none. The top two in each group advance plus the two best third-place teams, which offers Bolivia hope. The last group matches on Monday move 560 kilometers north to Trujillo, where Peru meets Colombia, and Venezuela plays Bolivia. In Group B, Argentina plays Mexico, and Uruguay faces Ecuador. (AP)
