New Delhi:

Ecuador coach Luis Suarez says his team's entry into the second round in the 2006 World Cup would indicate progress. "Last time we didn't get past the first round. Getting to the second round would be quite something. We must not overreach ourselves and create illusions but the fact of reaching the second round would indicate a lot of progress on our part," he said. Not even the most optimistic Ecuador supporter could have foreseen his team being among the 32 finalists at Germany 2006 back in the middle of 2004 when their disastrous Copa America campaign in Peru led to the resignation of Coach Hernan Dario Gomez. Gomez, who was in charge of the team that qualified for the 2002 World Cup, handed the reins over to his Colombian compatriot and friend Luis Suarez. Just over a year later, Suarez was awarded a medal by President Alfredo Palacio in recognition of his achievement in taking Ecuador to their second World Cup finals.
