New Delhi:

Churchill Brothers of Goa have finally got rid of the chokers tag by lifting the 120th Durand Cup football tournament for the first time on Wednesday.

The Goan team defeated Mahindra United of Mumbai 1-0 in the final and took sweet revenge of their 0-5 loss to them in the 2001 final.

The win will be a boost for Churchill ahead of the inaugural Professional League, which starts later this month. They were runners-up thrice in the erstwhile National League.

And the man behind the success is the burly Nigerian Odafe Onyeke Okolic.

"Mahindra is a good team and scoring against a quality time is always a big satisfaction," said Odafe after the match.

It is Odafe's third season with the Goan club and he proved his worth by scoring in the 11th minute to give Churchill one of their biggest successes of all time at the Ambedkar Stadium.

The Nigerian has been in fine form through out the tournament. His goal in the final is his 11th in four matches. Odafe was also adjudged as the Man of the Match.

Odafe, standing on the top of the box, took on a through pass from the centre-half and went past the defender Dharamraj Ravan and slammed it into net, for the solitary goal of the match.

"I am very happy that as a captain i scored the winning goal for my team. A leader has to set an example by his performance and I did it tonight," said Odafe.

For Mahindra, it was the second loss in a final in the last two months. They lost in the Federation Cup final to East Bengal in September in Ludhiana.

"We are in the process of building a new team. We are still a young side and I am happy that we reached the final. We are still looking for a good attacking combination," said Mahindra coach Derek Pereira.

Pereira said that his team was not fully prepared for the tournament as some of the players were with the national team for a long time.

"We didn't get time to prepare well. Some of our players were on national duty. If we don't get all the players then how will I prepare my team," he said.
