Chelsea beat Werder Bremen 2-0

London:

Michael Essien and Michael Ballack scored a goal in each half on Tuesday, leading Chelsea to a 2-0 victory over Werder Bremen on the opening day of group play in the Champions League. Chelsea went ahead in the 24th when Essien scored, taking advantage of a mistake by Bremen defender Petri Pasanen. Pasanen stumbled in possession of the ball and left it for Essien, who scored from 12 meters. Werder Bremen pressed to open the second half, but Chelsea ended the threat in the 68th when Ballack converted a penalty. It was his first goal for Chelsea since moving from Bayern Munich. Bremen's best chance in the first half was in the 38th when Miroslav Klose's shot from 18 meters (yards) was deflected over the crossbar. Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko, playing his first Champions League game for the English champions, broke into the area alone in the 45th but failed to control the ball. Bremen came out attacking in the second half, holding long spells of possession. Klose came close in the 54th as his close-in header sailed over the crossbar. Klose was at it again in the 65th, this time hitting the crossbar with his close-in header. Three minutes later, Ballack converted the penalty. He took it instead of midfielder Frank Lampard, who has missed penalties for Chelsea and for England in the World Cup. Lampard hit the post in the 80th. Chelsea and defending champion FC Barcelona play in Group A and will meet in back-to-back games on October 18 and 31. (AP)
