Turin:

Alessandro Del Piero headed an 80th-minute winner for Juventus to beat FC Brugge 1-0 Tuesday and qualify for the knockout phase of the Champions League. Del Piero's 179th goal for Juventus has the Turin club atop Group A with Bayern Munich on 12 points. Brugge has six points and Rapid Vienna has no points. Del Piero's close-range goal came from a cross by Pavel Nedved. "It was important to qualify and we did it,'' Del Piero said. "First or second in the group standings does not matter. At this point of the competition all qualifiers are very strong.'' Juve attacked for long periods at the Stadio delle Alpi but was repeatedly frustrated by the tight defense of the Belgian team, which looked overly cautious and never threatened. The Italian club's only scoring chance in the first half came when striker David Trezeguet's header hit the post and bounced to Brugge goalkeeper Tomislav Butina. Juve, which leads the Serie A with 11 wins from 12 matches, started the second half strongly but Del Piero and Patrick Vieira shot wide from inside the area. Substitute Marcelo Zalayeta missed an easy chance in injury time, shooting wide in front of an open goal. Juventus plays Rapid and Brugge hosts Bayern on December 7. (AP)
