Champions League: Betis beats Monaco 1-0

Seville:

Striker Edu Schmidt scored in injury time to earn Real Betis a 1-0 win Tuesday over Monaco in the first leg of the Champions League's third qualifying round. Edu pounced on a long pass by midfielder Alberto Rivera to steer the ball home in the 93rd minute and bring the Spanish team a victory on its debut in Europe's top club competition. The two teams meet again in Monaco on Aug. 23 in their bid to reach the group stage. Monaco striker Emmanuel Adebayor wasted the first chance in the 9th minute when the Togolese international sidefooted wide at Manuel Ruiz de Lopera Stadium. Betis in chargeBetis then took charge and hit the post on three occasions before halftime through forward Fernando Fernandez, midfielder Marcos Assuncao and defender Juanito Gutierrez. With Betis winger Joaquin Sanchez causing Monaco severe difficulties, Edu also failed to capitalize in the 39th from Assuncao's curling long-range pass which had deceived the visitors' defense. Dani Martin almost gave Betis the lead on half time with a rising shot that was acrobatically tipped over by Monaco goalkeeper Flavio Roma. From the resulting corner, the striker's volley was chested away by Lucas Bernardi on the goalline. Monaco, losing Champions League finalist in 2004, hit back in the 54th when forward Javier Chevanton struck the post from point-blank range after Betis goalkeeper Toni Doblas could not hold a loose ball. Monaco then took the sting out of the Spanish team's attacks - until Edu's late strike denied it what would have been a valuable draw for Didier Deschamps' team. (AP)
