Manchester:

Manchester United have failed in their bid to buy Italian striker Paolo di Canio. The transfer deadline expired on Thursday and Canio couldn't be bought simply because United hadn't managed to sell Dwight Yorke. Canio, currently with West Ham, is best remembered for his tackle, so to speak, on a referee in 1998. He however says that he never wanted to leave his club in the first place. The 33-year-old says the club wanted to sell him but not the manager.
