Bundesliga: Leverkusen win, push fifth

Berlin:

Stefan Kiessling played a role in both goals on Sunday to push Bayer Leverkusen into fifth place in the Bundesliga with a 2-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg.

Tranquillo Barnetta put back a blocked attempt from Kiessling in the 37th minute, and the forward scored the second in the 52nd with a sidefoot of a cross.

Leverkusen coach Michael Skibbe said the 23-year-old Kiessling was trying to make a statement after not being nominated this week to the Germany team for two European championship qualifiers.

"He just doesn't understand why he wasn't named. He's been in this form for weeks," Skibbe said.

Both teams had plenty of scoring chances, but Wolfsburg couldn't convert or was denied by 22-year-old goalkeeper Rene Adler.

The team's score was an own-goal from Leverkusen defender Manuel Friedrich, who legged a cross between the wrong posts.

"We both really went at it on the attack," Skibbe said. "Adler had four or five great saves, otherwise the result could have been different."

Also, Arminia Bielefeld broke a seven-match winless streak with a 3-1 win over FC Nuremberg, the German Cup winner which has fallen into the relegation zone.

Andreas Wolf staked Nuremberg to a 43rd-minute lead, but Ruediger Kauf leveled in the 64th.

Artur Wichniarek in the 76th and South African teammate Sibusiso Zuma in the 90th then sealed the win.

Also, it was: Duisburg 0, Bochum 2; Stuttgart 3, Bayern Munich 1; Schalke 1, Hamburger SV 1; Werder Bremen 4, Karlsruhe 0; Borussia Dortmund 1, Eintracht Frankfurt 1; Hertha Berlin 1, Hannover 96 0; and Hansa Rostock 3, Energie Cottbus 2.
