Bremen beat Nuremberg 4-1

Werder Bremen leaped to fourth place in the Bundesliga after a comfortable four-one win over newly-promoted Nuremberg on Saturday.

Bremen:

Last season's German domestic double winners Werder Bremen entertained newly-promoted Nuremberg at their Weserstadion on Saturday - and took an early lead courtesy of Ivan Klasnic's header from Johan Micoud's corner. That was in the 13th minute and, five minutes later, Werder doubled their lead when Micoud turned from provider to scorer - firing past Raphael Schaefer from Miroslav Klose's centre. So two-nil at half-time, and little sign that last season's division two champions could breach the home defence. But that judgement proved too premature, as Valerien Ismael brought down Robert Vittek inside the penalty area and Marek Mintal made no mistake from the spot. Defence attack With 25 minutes still to go, Nuremberg may have harboured thoughts of a point - but Bremen decided the best means of defence was attack, and doubled their goal tally. On 75 minutes, captain Frank Baumann headed on Micoud's corner and Christian Schulz volleyed home from close range. Then, two minutes from time, Klasnic set up Fabian Ernst, who rifled the ball past Schaefer. So four-one it ended and Werder go fourth in the table, while Nuremberg's first season back in the top flight is proving something of a trial.(AP)
