Johannesburg:

Hosts South Africa went into Wednesday's international friendly against Bolivia at Ellis Park full of confidence following Saturday's 3-0 victory over Chad.

Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira fielded the same players that won that African Nations Cup qualifier but his team found themselves behind inside 20 minutes.

There was more than a touch of fortune about Joselito Vaca's goal after the ball was played onto the youngster by MacBeth Sibaya.

South Africa had much of the play for the rest of the first half, and came close when Surprise Moriri headed Lucas Thwala's cross just over the bar.

Moriri then thought he had scored in first-half injury-time but the Botswanan referee had already blown the half-time whistle.

Parreira made four half-time substitutions, one of which, Benedict Vilakazi, tested Bolivian goalkeeper Sergio Galarza from long range.

Another sub, Elrio Van Heerden, was then inches away with a curling shot that shaved the outside of the post.

But the Bolivians held on for their first win on foreign soil since 2003, bringing the Bafana Bafana back down to earth with a bump.
