Garry Flitcroft's first-half goal gave Blackburn a 1-0 upset over Manchester United, leaving the Reds four points behind league-leading Arsenal as the Gunners go into the Christmas break atop the Premier League. Everton played a scoreless draw Sunday at Liverpool's Anfield in one of England's most traditional derby matches. The draw left slumping Liverpool with only two points from its last seven matches. The Toffies had their best chance to score when 17-year-old substitute Wayne Rooney drove an 18-meter (yard) shot off the crossbar in the 74th minute. The derby match lacked quality scoring chances with Everton working hard to deny Liverpool possession. Flitcroft gave Blackburn a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute. Flitcroft scored after teammate Damien Duff's free kick was headed clear, with the midfielder driving it behind 'keeper Fabien Barthez. Man United had captain Roy Keane on the bench. Keane has been out for 3 1/2 months following hip surgery and suspension and played his last match for Man United on August 31. "It as a monster win for us against a top team,'' said Blackburn manager Graeme Souness. "It was a great team performance and I thought our front two were particularly good. They worked their socks off, cleverly held up play and showed they were top players.'' Man United saw its eight-game winning streak ended and heads into the holiday break with 35 points, two behind Chelsea and four behind the defending champions. Everton moved into fourth place (33) with the draw followed by Newcastle and Liverpool (32) and Southampton and Tottenham (28). Blackburn's win gave it ninth place with 27. Man United manager Alex Ferguson said his side squandered its chances. "I thought we did very well in the first half and could have scored four or five goals,'' he said. "But if you miss chances like we did today and conceded their only strike at goal you think it's not going to be your day.'' Chelsea won by the same score over Villa as Eidur Gudjohnsen and Frank Lampard scored at Stamford Bridge. The result made it seven home wins in a row and 10 games unbeaten in the league while Villa still hasn't won away from home and has scored just two goals. Newcastle beat Fulham 2-0 on goals by Peruvian midfielder Nolberto Solano and Welsh striker Craig Bellamy. Alan Shearer, who scored against every Premier League club except Fulham had a great chance to do it from the penalty spot but fired high and wide. Fulham's Pierre Wome was sent off for a foul. Last-place West Ham threw away the lead at Upton Park after Ian Pearce had scored with next to last Bolton hitting back through Michael Ricketts for a 1-1 tie. West Bromwich Albion tossed away a two-goal lead against the team above, Sunderland, after Danny Dichio and Jason Koumas had scored in the first half. England striker Kevin Phillips gained a deserved point for Sunderland with two strikes in the second half and the game finished 2-2. The bottom of the standings sees West Ham with 14 topped by Bolton (15), West Brom (16), Sunderland (18) and Leeds (21). Charlton looked in control against Birmingham City at St Andrews when Claus Jensen put Alan Curbishley's team ahead and the Blues had Geoff Horsfield sent off. But the home team gained a point when Paul Devlin fired in a penalty for 1-1 after Jensen's foul on Senegal's World Cup midfielder, Aliou Cisse. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
