These are good times for fans of Real Betis. On current form, the side from Seville are on course for a Champions League spot. So another victory and an extension of the unbeaten run to six games was to be expected when a struggling Deportivo la Coruna came calling on Sunday to the Rui De Lopera. Lionel Scaloni gave the 'verdiblanco' an early scare. But other than that, Betis looked comfortable - certainly creating more in the way of scoring chances. And in Marcos Assuncao, Betis possessed the most potent offensive weapon on the pitch. Gustavo Munua was up to the challenge the first time he threatened. But there was little the Uruguayan goalkeeper could do in the 39th minute. Shortly before half-time, Pablo Amo came close to adding to his side's woes, almost slicing the ball into his own net. Munua had to be at fault with his positioning for Assuncao's and Betis' second. The Brazilian was overjoyed - as were almost all of the 35-thousand fans in the stadium. The appearance of another Brazilian - Denilson - as a late second half substitute after several months out with a serious injury - only added to the festive mood. One more opportunity fell Scaloni's way - but the dispirited Galicians were a well beaten side. It finished 2-0 to Betis - that afforded them the considerable pleasure of leapfrogging arch city-rivals Seville into third place. (AP)
