Awaji, Japan:

David Beckham fever has gripped the southern Japanese island of Awaji, sending fans to extreme lengths, or heights, to get a view of the England superstar. England's World Cup squad closed its training camp to everyone, including the media, after a security breach of its accreditation procedures. The security cordon thrown around the camp did not stop hundreds of fans from waiting in the hot sun for a glimpse of the team, or of Beckham at least. Some would have made do with a view of Michael Owen, but in Japan, Beckham is the real prize. Undeterred by the tight security, some resolute fans hiked to the top of a nearby hill which afforded a view - albeit a long one - of the training pitch. For those who persevered, the reward eventually came in the form of a distant view of England's captain putting in some extra work on the training pitch. Beckham is battling to regain fitness for his team's injury-wracked World Cup campaign, which begins against Sweden on Sunday. Beckham has been nursing a broken foot, which was once football's most famous body part until Zinedine Zidane tore a thigh muscle in a friendly against South Korea on Sunday.
