Beckham returns home amid speculation

London:

Manchester United midfielder David Beckham returned to Britain on Saturday from his trip to the United States amid speculation that he is to depart his club for one of several in Europe. The player - who was awarded an Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to football - arrived in London on the eve of Barcelona FC's presidential elections in which he has become a central figure. One candidate, Joan Laporta, has been accused of misleading supporters over his claims he has an agreement with Manchester United to bring in the England captain if he wins. Lluis Bassat, who is a long-term favourite for the Barca hot seat but has seen a 29 per cent lead in the polls gradually shrink, has said he wants to see proof of the deal with Beckham. Some believe Laporta's claim to be a publicity stunt aimed at winning Barcelona's presidency. Laporta took the lead in the presidential campaign for the first time yesterday, according to a poll by the Catalan Daily Sport newspaper. Although attention is on Beckham in Barcelona, many other teams in Europe including Barca's long-term rival Real Madrid, and clubs such as AC Milan are reported to be interested in signing the player.
