Barcelona:

Barcelona moved seven points clear at the top of the Spanish League on Saturday following a three-nil victory at home to second-placed Real Madrid. Strikes from Samuel Eto'o and Giovanni Van Bronckhorst put the Catalan side two-nil ahead at the break, while a Ronaldinho penalty sealed the win midway through the second half. The visitors who went into the match with confidence after four straight wins, while Barcelona came in off the back of their first defeat this season, to Real Betis. As early as the third minute Henrik Larsson had a great chance to put Barcelona ahead - but could not quite reach the pass. Both sides were more or less evenly matched in the opening minutes in which both the crowd, and the players were rather boisterous. But then the home side began to look more threatening. Madrid were having to defend well. They were lucky that Eto'o's header went wide. And the visitors were saved again minutes later following a great clearance from Roberto Carlos on the line when Eto'o looked dangerous again. Madrid were getting back in the match. But then in the 29th minute Barca took the lead following a defensive mix-up between the Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas and Roberto Carlos. And they soon extended their advantage to two-nil. Fourteen minutes later they once again easily penetrated Madrid's defence, allowing Giovanni Van Bronckhorst to slot home his third league goal of the season. Madrid clearly needed to rethink their strategy at the break. But Barcelona were still dominant in the second half. Zinedine Zidane had a good shot at goal seven minutes after the restart, but it seemed clear this was not to be Madrid's night. Michael Owen come on in place of fellow Englishman David Beckham and tried to make a difference for the visitors. And a header, with one of his first touches of the game did come close in the 59th minute. Ronaldinho then tried his luck from the edge of the area. Fortunately for Madrid, he was just off target. A minute later however the home side could celebrate their third goal of the night. They were awarded a penalty for a tackle in the area on Eto'o and Ronaldinho calmly slotted home to give Barcelona an emphatic three-nil lead after 76 minutes. The home side kept their advantage to the final whistle, and now stand seven points clear at the top of the Spanish league with 29 points. (AP)
