Michael Ballack and two other starters missed Germany's first practice on Tuesday ahead of the Euro 2008 qualifying match against the Czech Republic.

The German captain arrived late because he played in Chelsea's 2-1 win at Tottenham on Monday in the English FA Cup quarterfinals.

Midfielders Torsten Frings and Bastian Schweinsteiger also missed the practice and are on coach Joachim Loew's long list of injuries.

Frings has a hamstring injury and Schweinsteiger has a swelling in his right foot, but both are expected to recover in time for Saturday's match in Prague.

Central defender Christoph Metzelder is doing light training only because his left eye is still closed following a collision in a Bundesliga game on Saturday.

Top striker Miroslav Klose and defender Clemens Fritz are suspended, while forwards Mario Gomez, Mike Hanke, Oliver Neuville and Gerald Asamaoh, midfielder Tim Borowski and defender Arne Friedrich are all injured.

The Germans are practicing in Frankfurt before flying to Prague.

Germany and the Czech Republic both have 10 points after four matches in Group D and the winner of the game in Prague could take a decisive step to qualifying for next year's tournament co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland.
