Midfielder Thomas Kahlenberg scored one goal and set up another to give A.J. Auxerre a two-one win over Monaco.

Auxerre:

Auxerre and Monaco, two of several clubs in the hunt for a Champions League spot, met in their first Ligue 1 match of the year on Thursday. 29-year-old Italian striker Marco Di Vaio, who was making his debut for Monaco following his loan move from Valencia until the end of the season, put the visitors ahead in the 30th minute after excellent work by Czech midfielder Jaroslav Plasil. However, the lead lasted only five minutes as Thomas Kahlenberg back-heeled into the path of Peguy Luyindula, who drilled a volley past a helpless Guillaume Warmuz. One-all at the break and the game was decided in the space of less than 30 seconds. Monaco pushed forward trying to retake the lead but Auxerre cleared the ball up to Luyindula in the centre circle. He fed Kanga Akale, who laid the ball into the path of Kahlenberg and he produced a stunning curling shot which settled the contest in Auxerre's favour. Auxerre have 35 points from 20 games, 12 points behind leaders Olympique Lyon who celebrated the New Year with a 4-0 away rout of Racing Strasbourg on Wednesday. Monaco remain eighth on 31 points, trailing Auxerre by four points and third-placed Paris St Germain by three. (AP)
