Austria earns World Cup play-off berth

Tel Aviv:

A last-gasp goal from skipper Andreas Herzog during injury time gave Austria a 1-1 draw in Tel Aviv on Saturday. The draw was enough to assure Austria a second place in the European qualification group 7 at the expense of their hosts Israel. The first half proved to be dull but the action started in the second half of the game. Israel was awarded a controversial penalty which Shimon Gershon converted to put his team ahead. When the match moved into stoppage time, Austria were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Israeli penalty area. Skipper Herzog kept his shot low and it sped past the Israeli keeper for the equalizer. With this draw in Tel Aviv, Austria have made it into the World Cup play-offs. Austria will now play Turkey for a place in the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan.
