Arsenal inch closer to title with win over West Ham

Highbury:

Arsenal moved four points clear of nearest rivals Liverpool at the top of the English Premier league standings after they beat West Ham United 2-0 at Highbury on Wednesday night. The win puts the gunners on the verge of their first league title since 1998. Freddie Ljungberg, who scored twice in the Arsenal's weekend win over Ipswich, had an early shot but it was pushed wide by West Ham keeper David James. Frederic Kanoute put Arsenal's backline under pressure after he beat two defenders, but smashed his shot over the crossbar with only David Seaman to beat. Kanoute had another great chance to put his team ahead in the 38th minute. Despite a great solo run, his goal-bound shot was apparently cleared off the line by Ashley Cole. Replays however showed the ball had indeed crossed the line. In the second half, Dennis Bergkamp tried his luck from just outside the penalty area. But the Dutchman's shot went over the crossbar. Arsenal fans looked on nervously waiting for the all-important goal. It finally came though in the 77th minute. Bergkamp managed a great pass into the area for Ljunberg, who made no mistake steering the ball past the West Ham keeper to put the gunners ahead. Three minutes later, a cross from Ljungberg found substitute Kanu who bounced the ball over David James for a 2-0 lead. Thata€™s how it stayed, the win extending Arsenal's lead at the top of the table to four points.
