Rome:

Andriy Shevchenko scored his league-leading 16th goal as European champion AC Milan beat Bologna 2-0 yesterday and extended its Serie A lead to five points ahead of AS Roma and Juventus. Struggling Roma lost 1-0 at Brescia on Saturday, and Juventus defeated Chievo 1-0 yesterday behind Mauro Camoranesi's 10th-minute tally. After 19 rounds of the 34-week season, Milan has 48 points and Roma and Juventus have 43 each. "For sure Milan is breaking away, but it's not over yet," said Marcello Lippi, coach of two-time defending champion Juventus. "In the last few years even having a six-point lead has never decided anything." Milan's city rival Inter Milan defeated Siena 4-0 last night at San Siro. Uruguayan striker Alvaro Recoba and Brazilian forward Adriano scored two goals each. Adriano was making his first start for Inter since being transferred from Parma. He now has 10 goals in 11 matches played this season. In Bologna, Shevchenko scored on a header from 10 metres, using a full flick of the head to redirect a pass from behind by Andrea Pirlo in the 19th. Bologna, with newly signed Japanese midfielder Hidetoshi Nakata directing the attack and disqualified coach Carlo Mazzone watching from the stands, outplayed Milan for long stretches in both halves but was thwarted on numerous occasions by Milan's Brazilian goalkeeper Dida. Danish striker Jon Dahl Tomasson replaced Shevchenko in the 83rd and broke Bologna's offside trap six minutes later, lifting the ball over 'keeper Gianluca Pagliuca for Milan's second score. (AP)
