In some of the top football stories of the day, Kabul goes back to playing football in a stadium that till now was being used for executions and the nominees for the FIFA world player of the year are out.Turks celebrateThousands could be seen celebrating on the streets of Turkey after the country fired itself into the World Cup finals with a blistering 5-0 win against Austria in the second leg of their playoff.The Turks dominated much of the game with Inter Milan forward Okan Burak linking with Hakan Sukur to devastating effect to guarantee a first World Cup berth since 1954.Brazillians low keyCelebrations in Brazil were relatively low key. Fans here are clearly unhappy with the performance of their team and what the country's own media have dubbed 'Bully-boy football'. In the bars of Rio, there is a sentiment of relief that Brazil has avoided the unthinkable but the celebrations are muted. Brazil scraped into the World Cup in the final game of a campaign in which they used four coaches and lost an unprecedented six of their 18 matches including defeats to Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay and Ecuador.Deadly sportsAnd players in Kabul were celebrating a victory of a different kind. Football is being played here on the same ground that was used for public executions during the Taliban regime. The game was banned during the Taliban's rule apart from special occasions when the players were allowed to play the game wearing Taliban approved outfits - trousers and full sleeved t-shirts.Beckham in the runningThe nominees for the football world player of the year are out and England captain David Beckham is one of the contenders. If he wins he could be the first Brit to do so since the award was instituted in 1991. Portugal and Real Madrid's Luis Figo is also one of the three nominees. The award will be announced on December 17.And Raul, another player from Real Madrid rounds off the list. Interestingly all three players played a major role in their respective countries qualifying for the World Cup.
