Warne Vs Murali: Debate over bowling action

New Delhi:

His world record for most test wickets may not last long but Shane Warne has already etched his place in cricket history. He has been part of a world champion team and was Man of the Match in the 1999 world cup final which Australia won. He has also been named one of the five cricketers of the century by wisden. But more importantly he feels that he and his tribe have made sure that the art of spin is kept alive."Through Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Muralitharan, Saqlain and myself, we have proved that spinners can be successful in both one day and test cricket. There have been people who have said that spinners have no role in first class cricket, let alone test cricket. I am glad we have shown them that they did not know what they were talking about," said Warne.Doosra controversyMuttiah Muralitharan has also done his bit for the spinners but his reputation has taken a bit of a dent with the ICC ruling that his doosra is illegal. He has been called a javelin thrower by a former India captain and has suffered the humiliation of being no-balled and being put through various bio-mechanical tests to prove that his bent arm is indeed a birth defect. Both the spinners go head to head in the numbers game. Warne steals a march when it comes to overseas performances. He is the first bowler to have taken 300 plus wickets away while Murali currently has just 190 of his 532 wickets away from Sri Lanka. The five wicket hauls for the Australian bowler are evenly spread out at home and away while for Murali it is 30 at home and less than half away. While Murali's answer to all these statistics will be that Warne played in a world champion team, the fact is that barring injury the off spinner will most certainly end up with the individual record for most wickets and that number may well be past 600 by the time he is done.
