Warne, McGrath look to make comeback

Melbourne: Shane Warne is desperate to prove his form in a Victoria second XI match next week in a last-ditch bid to win a recall for Australia after a 12-month doping ban. Glenn McGrath is considering making himself available for the New South Wales second XI after six months out following operations on his left ankle, but hopes his national selection chances aren't compromised if he doesn't feel like playing. Warne, Australia's leading bowler and the No 1 leg-spinner of all time with 491 test wickets, and McGrath, Australia's leading pace bowler with 430 wickets, both want to tour Sri Lanka starting later this month. Australia won a series against Zimbabwe and tied a four-test series against India without its two leading bowlers over the southern summer, but the bowling attack lacked depth. Warne was suspended for 12 months from the day Australia opened its World Cup campaign in South Africa last year after returning a positive for banned diuretics in an out-of-competition test. McGrath's last match for Australia was against Bangladesh in July. The Australian selectors will meet next week to choose limited-overs and Test squads for five one-dayers, starting February 20, and three test matches in March. Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has urged Warne not to try too hard when he lines up for a four-day match against Queensland's seconds starting Wednesday, the day after his ban expires on February 10.
