Wellington:

New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori has supported India's call for an extra Test when the team comes here in March this year.

India are scheduled to reach New Zealand on March 1 and play their first match, a Twenty20 clash, on March 6.

Five one-dayers follow before the first of the originally-planned two-Test series starts in Hamilton from March 26. The second Test will be held in Wellington from April 3.

But the BCCI has asked its New Zealand counterpart to arrange for an extra Test after the Indian government refused to clear the team's tour of Pakistan for a scheduled series in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks.

"I'm pretty excited. I think most players have been crying out for that third Test match style series," Vettori said on the eve of the third one-dayer against the West Indies at Westpac Stadium on Wednesday.

"It gives an opportunity for one team to win the series and probably makes it a little bit more interesting. The fact it's India and the fact they're one of the best teams in the world at the moment... I think everyone would love to make it happen," the skipper was quoted as saying in the 'New Zealand Press Association'.

"I'm not sure if logistically it can happen but if it's do-able, I'd love to see it happen," Vettori said.

If an additional Test in included in the itinerary then most probably it could be held at the start of the tour. Napier's McLean Park seems the preferred venue to host the match.

New Zealand coach Andy Moles too has welcomed the prospect and feels another match against the Indians could be arranged to help his side's development in the Test arena.

"I personally think we need to play as much Test match cricket as possible," he said.

"Time willing it would a great thing. India are one of the better sides in the world so the exposure our players would get from playing them would be very important."

New Zealand Cricket face a tricky situation to fit in the logistics but a decision is likely to be reached within this week.
