Multan:

England cricket captain Michael Vaughan was unlikely to recover from a knee injury before the team's first Test against Pakistan in the coming series, a team official said Wednesday."Michael remains very doubtful for the first Test, but will continue to travel with the squad,'' said England team's media manager Andrew Walpole. The first Test begins Saturday in the eastern Pakistan city of Multan, hometown of Pakistan's captain Inzamam-ul-Haq.Players and officials from both teams arrived Wednesday morning from the city of Lahore, where Pakistan 'A' defeated England by six wickets in a three-day warm-up game Tuesday.Vaughan twisted his right knee during England's second innings against Pakistan 'A' Monday, when he sprinted for a run and fell at the non-striker's end.Medical expertsHe received on-field treatment but limped off and was taken to a hospital for scans. He twisted the same knee before the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's last year, but recovered in time to play the second. The England and Wales Cricket Board's medical experts consulted radiologists and orthopedic specialists about the knee injury after the reports of the scans were sent to England on Tuesday."Michael's orthopedic specialist in the UK has viewed scans of his knee and the advice we have received is that he should rest the injury,'' the board said in a statement.Walpole said the medical team traveling with England squad would closely monitor the captain's injury. Also Wednesday, the England selectors named Essex opening batsman Alastair Cook as cover for Vaughan. The 20-year-old left-hander, who made a double hundred against Australia for Essex last season, is a former England Under 19 captain and was selected for this winter's ECB National Academy Squad. He toured Sri Lanka with England 'A' after being called up as a replacement for Kevin Pietersen.
