Tri-series is wide open: Dhoni

Canberra:

After the eight-wicket defeat by Sri Lanka in Canberra on Tuesday, India skipper MS Dhoni said the Commonwealth Bank Triangular One-Day Series was still wide-open.

"The tournament is wide open. All the three sides are good and are playing good cricket. So it is very much open," Dhoni said at Manuka Oval.

The win has brought Sri Lanka into the reckoning, though they are still third in the points tally, behind India (8 points in 4 matches) and Australia (7 in 3).

Australia, at the moment, have the best net run rate (+1.146), followed by India (+0.147) and Lanka (-1.675).

'Rohit was impressive'

Dhoni praised Rohit Sharma for his unbeaten 70, and said that India's batting had improved since the T20 loss to Australia.

"We had a decent start and Rohit capitalised on that. Our batting has improved since the Twenty20 game we played here. If we can do that consistently, that would be good," he said.

Winning toss was crucial: Jayawardene

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardane said it was the toss that proved crucial on Tuesday.

"It was a crucial toss. But more than the toss, it was our guys who put the effort. It was a crucial game for us to win to be in the tournament," Jayawardene said after the match at Manuka Oval.

"I would also like to thank the ground staff, it was raining but we managed to play. I am sure the crowd enjoyed the game," he said, referring to the two rain interruptions.

Poor bowling in the slog

Jayawardene also acknowledged that Lankan bowling was poor during the slog overs.

"We gave 20 extra runs to India. Our bowling was not disciplined during the last overs. We had our target 10-15 overs, so there was no pressure on us. Sanath gave us a good start and Dilshan batted well to carry that forward. In the end, everything clicked for us," he said.

Jayawardane said that his team, after today's win on India, was looking to take on world champions Australia on Friday.

"We have a big one against Australia. We are back in the tournament now and looking forward to the match. Our target is to reach the finals," he declared.
