Tillakaratne dropped for tests

Colombo: Former captain Hashan Tillakaratne has been dropped for the upcoming two-match Test series against Zimbabwe and selectors have included upcapped batsman Ian Daniel in the squad, a Sri Lanka Cricket Board spokesman said today. Daniel, a 22-year-old right-handed batsman, allrounder Thilan Samaraweera and wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene will leave for Zimbabwe tomorrow to join their teammates currently playing in the limited-over series, Ray Illangakoon said. Selectors have still not decided if any player from the one-day squad will return to Sri Lanka, he said. Tillakaratne retired from limited-overs cricket after last year's World Cup in South Africa, before being appointed Test captain. He stepped down as captain after Sri Lanka suffered its first ever 3-0 home series defeat against Australia last month. Tillakaratne, 36, said however that he will be available for selection as a batsman. The left-hander has played in 83 Test matches and scored 4,545 runs at nearly 43 runs per inning. Newcomer Daniel has played in 62 first-class matches and scored 3,086 runs. Though considered the best wicketkeeper in the country, Prasanna Jayawardene has been on the sidelines because of a lack of prowess with the bat since his test debut against Pakistan in 2000. Jayawardene has played in three test matches for Sri Lanka, his last match being against Bangladesh in Colombo nearly two years ago. The Test series begins in Harare on May 6.
