The rise of Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Ranchi/New Delhi:

MS Dhoni scored a zero in his only international Twenty20 game in South Africa but will play his next one as a captain.

It has taken Dhoni just three years of international cricket to convince the selectors of his leadership potential. Mahi, as he is fondly called, has come a long way since his debut in 2004.

MSD announced his arrival on the international stage with a fabolous 148 against Pakistan in 2005.

He then scored 183 not out against Sri Lanka, which is still the highest score by a wicket-keeper in one-dayers.

His idol might be Adam Gilchrist but one area in which Dhoni scores over his Australian counterpart is that he's a great finisher.

When india won 17 one-dayers in a row while chasing, it was Dhoni who was often the difference between victory and defeat.

Dhoni averaged an incredible 211 in that 17-match winning streak proving his worth in the squad. And his average of 46.97 from 76 one-dayers is the highest among all the current Indian batsmen.

His current test average is'nt too bad either at 34.26 after 19 games.

However, batting statistics is not what got Dhoni the job as the captain. He probably got the vote because of his ability to judge a situation.

That's precisely why he can cut out the frills and get the job done like he did in the Lord's Test. His 76 not out in that game helped India hang on to a draw by one wicket.

His hair, his advertisements, his bikes have all catapulted him into the limelight as much as his flamboyant batting.

However the 26-year-old has'nt let any of that go to his head, which means that the selectors hope that he will be just as level headed when it comes to leadership issues.
