Chennai:
"Almost every member of the Indian cricket team has been carrying some injury or other due to continuous cricket. If you want top notch performance on the field, match fitness is very important," Srinivasan said.
"...None of them want to sit out for even one match as their place in the team will be jeopardised...(They feel) your spot is gone if you sit out for one match. The person who replaces will try to cement his place in the team," he said addressing a function at India's first-ever sports sciences institute at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and hospital.
"Except for Sachin Tendulkar and skipper M S Dhoni, who have been offering themselves to sit out due to their injuries, none of the other cricketers are willing to do so fearing losing their spot in the team," he added.
Srinivasan also responded to the statement of former South African Team Physio Prof Timothy D Noakes (Director, Department of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, University of Cape Town), who spoke on the 'Art of reading the ball before it is bowled'.
Srinivasan said it would be a useful and worthy case study to figure out which side the ball delivered by Sri Lankan spin sensation Ajantha Mendis will turn after pitching.
"Perhaps your players have not played Ajantha Mendis. No one knows what type of delivery he bowls. You play him and find for yourself and then the BCCI will be there (in the Institute)," Srinivasan said in a lighter vein.
Prof Noakes said "(Coach) Gary (Kirsten) had a stint in his institute before taking up the assignment with the Indian Board".
On Mendis' penetrative bowling during Sri Lanka's tour of India last year, Srinivasan said "Virender Sehwag did not allow him to land with his stupendous batting and Gambhir was able to handle in properly.
"Sachin and Dhoni struggled. But none of the other batsmen had no clue on which side the ball will turn after pitching. We are going to Sri Lanka again, it (studying his bowling) will definitely help us".
